2020: A Year of Surprising Growth

COVID-19 has been disrupting manufacturing supply chains. Consequently, manufacturers have had to adapt and seek new solutions to acquire the supplies they need. According to IndustryNet , the industrial marketplace that connects buyers with 400,000 U.S. manufacturers and suppliers of more than 10,000 products and services, category searches on the site for the month of April surged 42% over April of 2019, suggesting that U.S. manufacturers are on the hunt for new domestic suppliers to help fill gaps in the supply chain. This trend has continued throughout 2020. Some of the most searched for items behind tools were steel pipes and tubes, including carbon steel tubing and welded steel tubing. U.S. Industrial production rose 1.1% in October after easing back in September, according to the latest report from the Federal Reserve, released November 17, 2020. Specifically, steel tubing manufacturers are experiencing sustainable growth because they produce a wide range of specialized product...

Difference Between Tube and Pipe

Have you ever wondered if there is a difference between steel tube and steel pipe? Are these words interchangeable to describe the same cylindrical piece of metal? As it turns out, there is indeed a significant difference and they are not synonymous. So let's take a look at the differences. 1. Measuring Diameter This might not seem like a big difference, but it actually is. Steel tube is measured from outside edge to outside edge, while pipe is measured only for the internal opening. This is because steel tube has its strength determined by the thickness of its walls, and steel pipe's usefulness is determined by the volume it can hold. It is common to find a 12-inch pipe, but it would be extremely rare to find a 12-inch tube. Tubes are used in applications that require a smaller size. 2. Structure Steel tube does not have to be cylindrical. It can be square or some other shape. Pipe, on the other hand, is always round. Tube can have a seam while pipe is a uniform piece. Pipe te...

Basic Welding Joints

Welded joints are one of the most commonly seen joints although there is much more that goes into them than most realize. A Weld Joint is characterized by being the place where two or more metal pieces are joined together through the introduction of melted solder and high heat. There are 5 types of weld joints, corner, lap, tee, edge, and butt. Each one has it's own unique qualities and the best places to implement.  The butt joint is formed by placing the ends of two parts together. The two parts either lie on the same plane or are side by side. It is the most simple type of weld joint. There are a few different types of welds involved with a good butt joint. Next, let's focus a little on the corner joint. The corner joint is another pretty basic option for beginners and looks exactly how it sounds. This joint is identified by the two welded pieces being joined together in the shape of an L. It is important to remember to weld both the front and back of the L shape for struc...

Steel Tubing's Influence on Construction

As we've covered before, there are thousands of applications for steel tubing products in just about every corner of the world and in a huge amount of different industries. One of those industries is in the construction of new buildings, far and wide, for a ton of different uses, like apartments, office space or governmental decision-making. Most of these buildings will likely be built with the help of scaffolding which is made with an array of steel tubing parts. Let's take a look at why scaffolding is so important and how steel tubing is an important part of the construction industry as we know it!  Safety: Scaffolding is important for ensuring the safety of the workers that are contracted to construct a new building. These structures help create a flat surface for workers to stand on while they work and also allow more than one person at a time to be working in a similar area or site. The creation of handrails on the top platforms for scaffolding also helps ensure worker s...

Simple Welding Projects

Steel tubing  is a great material for beginning level welders. Its versatility makes it the perfect material for everything from tables and benches, to garden trellises.  Welding can be a little intimidating when you're just starting but watching your creations come to life can become quite the hobby or even side job. Interested in getting started but not sure what you want to make first? A  simple end table  is one of the simplest projects. Chose your desired steel tubing and place the pieces together in a way that resembles your end design. Begin to weld the tubing together in the places that touch together. Before long you'll have a sturdy stand made at the tips of your own hands. You can choose from a range of tabletops to add on or have the ability to change them as you desire. Once you get comfortable with the small scale tables, start working on the same type of structure but on a large scale or a more complicated design. Benches  do require a litt...

Applications of Steel Tubing

There is a wide array of applications for the products offered by Ohio Galvanized Tube. No matter your walk of life, you've likely seen or directly dealt with many of the various projects that steel tubing is used in throughout your lifetime. Below we will take a look at just a few of the many projects that steel tubing appears in around the United States and the world!  Greenhouses: Steel tubing is the perfect base for building a greenhouse. Along with the tubing being versatile for creating the exact shape of your greenhouse, steel tubing is also the perfect material as it is able to withstand the damp environments by being rust and corrosion resistant!    Conveyors: Although you may not have been exposed to conveyors in your daily lives unless you work in a factory, these are very important for the production of many goods. Steel tubing lays the groundwork for almost all conveyors, no matter if it is in a conventional factory or in the depths of the earth in a mining ...

5 Stainless Steel Tube Facts

Unless you are a metal enthusiast, you may not know all there is to know about metal and its properties. From carbon steel to cast iron to stainless steel, there are several materials to choose from when it comes to tubing for hydraulic, pneumatic, or other industrial projects. Here are 5 facts you might not know about stainless steel tubing. Cost-Effectiveness: One of the most appealing benefits of using stainless steel tubes is its cost! It costs less to maintain and can save you money over time because of their long service life. Welding Capabilities: Certain stainless steel is heat treatable. This can be helpful when stainless steel tubes need to be modified to achieve certain physical or chemical properties. Certain stainless steel sheets can also be easily welded into various shapes and sizes. Resistance: Thanks to its properties, stainless steel tubing offers significantly more resistance to corrosive elements, oxidation, erosion, and high temperatures than most other metal t...
