Ohio & Steel: A Historical Partnership

Ohio has always been a well-known state for production of many things. But the steel industry is one of the products that made Ohio what it is today, that's why we at Ohio Galvanized Tube are proud to call North Central Ohio home!

The first blast furnace was created in Ohio in 1802, the same year that the state was admitted to the Union, but by the short period of time to 1853, Cleveland became the third-largest iron and steel city in the whole country at the time. This led to the growth of Akron, Canton and Youngstown, which made the Cuyahoga and Mahoning Valleys some of the best performing steel and iron cities throughout the nation. The ever-continuing expansion to the western part of the continent provided more opportunities for Ohio as more and more steel was needed to create the railroads that would lead people to the new territories. As companies began to integrate in the early 1900s, Ohio remained competitive with the help of new strategies by the American Iron and Steel Institute. By that time the Mahoning Valley was creating 9% of the country's pig iron.

By the late 1900s iron and steel production was vastly changing. Recession and inflation hit the production lines hard, but after a long period of uncertainty, Ohio and the nation restored their steel and iron capabilities to profitability. This was mainly the result of merging companies, new technologies and revamped union and work rules. As of today, Ohio still produces as much steel as we did before the hard time of the late 1990s.

Ohio Galvanized Tube is proud to be a part of North Central Ohio and the proud tradition of iron and steel working in the great state of Ohio!

Basic Welding Joints

Welded joints are one of the most commonly seen joints although there is much more that goes into them than most realize. A Weld Joint is characterized by being the place where two or more metal pieces are joined together through the introduction of melted solder and high heat. There are 5 types of weld joints, corner, lap, tee, edge, and butt. Each one has it's own unique qualities and the best places to implement.  The butt joint is formed by placing the ends of two parts together. The two parts either lie on the same plane or are side by side. It is the most simple type of weld joint. There are a few different types of welds involved with a good butt joint. Next, let's focus a little on the corner joint. The corner joint is another pretty basic option for beginners and looks exactly how it sounds. This joint is identified by the two welded pieces being joined together in the shape of an L. It is important to remember to weld both the front and back of the L shape for struc...

Steel Tubing's Influence on Construction

As we've covered before, there are thousands of applications for steel tubing products in just about every corner of the world and in a huge amount of different industries. One of those industries is in the construction of new buildings, far and wide, for a ton of different uses, like apartments, office space or governmental decision-making. Most of these buildings will likely be built with the help of scaffolding which is made with an array of steel tubing parts. Let's take a look at why scaffolding is so important and how steel tubing is an important part of the construction industry as we know it!  Safety: Scaffolding is important for ensuring the safety of the workers that are contracted to construct a new building. These structures help create a flat surface for workers to stand on while they work and also allow more than one person at a time to be working in a similar area or site. The creation of handrails on the top platforms for scaffolding also helps ensure worker s...
