Steel Facts

Steel is a low-carbon alloy that is generally made from a combination of carbon, iron, and tin. Because of steel's makeup, it makes it be able to withstand corrosion, extreme heat, and high pressure. All good reasons for steel to show up commonly in fabrication shops and why we here at Ohio Galvanized Tube rely on it. Why do we choose steel fabrication? Steel has a lot of little known great qualities. Here are a few fast facts

1. More than 80 million tons of steel are recycled in North America per year. That's nearly 70% of all steel and more than paper, aluminum, plastic, and glass combined.

2. Steel is one of the main production elements in delivering renewable energy. Energy sources like solar, hydro, and wind are oftentimes made prominently of steel.

3. Since the Industrial Revolution, steel manufacturing has reduced its carbon footprint by over 60%.

4. Almost every single industry uses steel in some way, but building construction is the highest.

5. The Steel industry is the 2nd largest industry in the world with over $900 billion turn over. Gas and Oil is the only higher industry.

6. United States is the 3rd leading steel producer. Japan and China are first and second, respectively.

7. Over two million people are employed by the steel industry.

8. On average, 600 steel cans are recycled every second in the United States alone.

9. Steel is used in bridges as it is 4 to 8 times lighter than concrete and much more durable and long-lasting.

10. Heat causes minimal steel expansion, but it does happen. For example, the Eiffel Tower is roughly 6 inches taller in the summer than the winter.

Undoubtedly, steel tubing offers a lot of great benefits and can be used in such a wide range of environments and production. From greenhouse tubing, to fire sprinkler piping and solar energy tubing, Ohio Galvanized Tube is can fabricate steel piping for any client's needs.

Basic Welding Joints

Welded joints are one of the most commonly seen joints although there is much more that goes into them than most realize. A Weld Joint is characterized by being the place where two or more metal pieces are joined together through the introduction of melted solder and high heat. There are 5 types of weld joints, corner, lap, tee, edge, and butt. Each one has it's own unique qualities and the best places to implement.  The butt joint is formed by placing the ends of two parts together. The two parts either lie on the same plane or are side by side. It is the most simple type of weld joint. There are a few different types of welds involved with a good butt joint.
